Ethics - What time to be thinking about all this!
So feeling a bit overwhelmed with everything, in module 2... I keep starting on one thing and then going back to another- just so many pieces to put together. so I am writing this as I start compiling a draft of all my thinking! Word docs, written pages... it's all a bit of a jumble alongside the whole COVID-19 situation, it has made me step back a bit though and try and put things into perspective a bit more... but at the same time, now that I guess I have a bit more time, it has also made me think of the things I 'could' be doing, creating and what others are doing...comparing... a bad word! This has bought me to some of the ethical considerations, during my planning in Module 2:
ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Where there is a conflict between law and ethics, ethical considerations must come first.
MY QUESTION: HOW TO CRAFT A HEALTHY WORK/LIFE BALANCE AS AN ARTIST?
- Resilience - Having a thick skin- what does this mean? Should this be something we have to deal with? casting directors/companies need to be more honest/open and reply. is this just accepted rudeness?
- The word 'Fail' if you change paths your 'acting career failed' we don't say this if people change profession in a non-creative sense. you still worked professionally and had jobs.
- Mental Health: Why is creativity looked down upon? why is it linked to mental health, - Sylvia Plath Effect- creativity = suffering.
- Creativity - The fact that companies/schools are not wholly embracing it, are they scared of the reputation?
- Protective Phycological Construct- how to other cultures deal with creativity and being able to 'keep skilled' - TED TALK Elizabeth Gilbert; Ancient Greece/Rome - having a 'creative elf/ genius' with you - creating a barrier between work and the human/person. but our culture went back to 'being a genius' too much pressure/responsibility.
- Are the artists always separate from the role/ piece? or does the artists' viewpoint allow them to create art, can it be separated?
- You as an actor/artist and your work - the self TED TALK Thandi Newton - The 'self' being a projection of our society and fear. Are you 'less you' the more you take on other roles/ who are you? are you, you in a role?
- WHAT IS A CREATIVE PROCESS?
- Our responsibility in telling a story- is there the pressure of telling someone else's story well? integrity as an actor?
- What is success? Is this different to different people?
PERSONAL ETHICS SOCIAL/CULTURAL ETHICS PROFESSIONAL ETHICS I WANT TO BE ABLE TO CREATE A WORK/LIFE BALANCE ARTISTS/ACTORS ARE DEPRESSED AND USUALLY STRUGGLE WITH THE ONES THAT WANT IT THE MOST STAY IN THE GAME AS AN ARTIST, AS IT IS A REAL CHALLENGE TO JUGGLE DIFFICULTIES AND DEPENDENCIES, THEY CANNOT BE RELIABLE IF YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES YOU WILL SUCCEED EVERYTHING THAT COMES WITH BEING AN ACTOR. I SUFFER WITH THERE IS NO STRUCTURE AND CREATIVES ARE JUST ABLE TO SWITCH USUALLY, IT'S GETTING A GOOD AGENT/ AUDITIONS AND THEN YOUR WORKING TRUST, NOT FEELING GOOD ENOUGH AND BALANCING THE CREATIVE AND BUSINESS THEIR SKILL ON/OFF. AUDITIONS ARE EASY TO GET AND YOU MUST NOT BUT THAT IS ONLY 1% OF THE ACTING PROFESSION. SIDE. BE VERY GOOOF IF YOU DON’T END UP ON TV. THEY DO NOT LET YOU KNOW 'IF YOU DON’T HEAR, YOU HAVE'NT GOT THE JOB' MY ENQUIRY TOPIC SHOULD HELP TO CREATE A ROUTINE/ GUIDANCE WITH THIS CAREER CHOICE BEING SELF EMPLOYED MUST BE EASY AND ALL YOUR JOB IS. THE NEED TO DO THIS JOB /CAREER - THE FLOE AND PASSION CREATED AND WHERE I FEEL 'AT HOME' ACTING/DANCING/SINGING ETC YOU DO NOT 'NEED' TO DO THIS JOB - EASY TO GIVE UP IF STRUGGLING WHERE DOES THIS COME FROM? WHERE DOES THIS COME FROM? WHERE DOES THIS COME FROM? LIFE EXPERIENCES- SEEING MY COLLEAGUES STRUGGLE WITH SIMILAR THINGS, JUGGLING TOO MUCH TV/FILM ADVERTISING - YOU ONLY SEE THE 1% OF ACTORS THAT ARE DOING WELL MOST CASTING DIRECTORS WILL ONLY SEE THE SAME FEW AND DON’T BRANCH OUT NOT HAVING A CLEAR DIRECTION, ALWAYS BEEN IN A STRUCTURED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, AND ARE FAMOUS, THEY THINK YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL THAT ENOUGH, THE INDUSTRY IS SATURATED SO THEY CANNOT SEE 'EVERYONE' EXPLORING IN LESSONS BUT USUALLY AROUND 'A WAY OF DOING SOMETHING' NOT MY OWN CHOICES ACTORS WILL BE PUBLICISED AND THE MEDIA WILL ALWAYS SHOW THE BAD TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE - CAN ONLY SEE A CERTAIN NUMBER OF PEOPLE I DON’T THINK WE HAD ENOUGH SUPPORT FROM TRAINING TO GO INTO THE REAL PROFESSION HAPPENING - SO THIS VIEW IS WIDELY PUBLISHED DRAMA SCHOOLS VIEW OF THE PROFESSION DRAMA SCHOOL - LOOSING MY OWN TRUST/CONFIDENCE PRESSURE OF DOING SOMETHING AS GOOD AS THE LAST 'CREATION' MAYBE I CAN CREATE MY OWN ROUTINE/ TO FEEL CREATIVELY STIMULATED? CREATIVITY IS EXCITING AND YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT IN LIFE - MAYBE THINGS ARE CHANGING- WITH SELF TAPES AND WEB 2.0, THEY CAN WILL THIS COURSE AND MY NEW WAY OF WORKING ALLOW ME TO TRSUT MYSELF? ARCHAIC VIEWS MAY BE SHIFTING WITH THE OPPORTUNITIES OF WEB 2.0 AND SEE MORE PEOPLE PERHAPS MORE STRATEGIES LIKE 'THE WATERMILL THEATRE' DRAMA SCHOOLS CAN GIVE MORE 'BUSINESS' HOW TO JUGGLE LESSONS AT SCHOOL NETWORKING/COMMUNITY ONCE THEY HAVE CAST YOU. CANNOT COME BACK THAT SEASON - SHARE THE WORK. MAYBE CREATING A WORK-LIFE BALANCE IS SOMETHING MORE THAN MY CREATIVITY AND MY JOB? MEDIA MUST STOP SHAMING AND HARASSMENT THEY SHOULD ALWAYS LET YOU KNOW ALL APPLICANTS/AUDITIONEES
Sophie Costers Blog was a real influence and very helpful!
https://sophiebapp.blogspot.com/2020/03/a-new-kind-of-normal-challenging-ethics.htmlSCHOOLS NEED TO ALLOW MORE CLASSES VALUED THE SAME AS ENGLISH/MATHS APPLICANTS/AUDITIONEES IF NOT GOT THE JOB definitely check it out
TED TALKS that inspired some of these issues:SCIENCE - WEIGHED THE SAME. Thandi Newton - Embracing Otherness

Hey! I found this blog very interesting. I am now on Module 3 and my perception of 'ethics' has really changed over the last couple of modules. We spoke about it in a skype call the other day and I made a blog post on my views of ethics if you are interested in looking. https://cathleenlimerick.blogspot.com/2020/04/critical-reflection-and-ethics-skype.html
