Reflection in these strange times (Skype 03/04)

Okay, so this module seems to be riddled with hurdles to jump over...and thinks I am not used to, so... the critical reflection part of the portfolio...

Critical reflection is a reasoning process to make meaning of an experience

Strangely I feel like the COVID-19 situation we find ourselves in has sort of put me in a position where I have to 'practice what I preach'; my inquiry topic is 'How to craft a healthy work/life balance as an artist' and being in this very strange position of limbo, regarding work I am having to stay creative and positive and really work out what this balance is for me, so in a way a good time to be researching this idea!

So my learning process:

I guess my format was a step by step process by making a map of all the things I wonder about my career and this course, interesting topics that came up and conversations around my profession. Going through that and picking my favorite topics and having conversations with others in my field really helped. Looking through literature, articles, TED Talks on my subject and writing notes about them. Going through each section of the handbook and making notes on each part, then finally trying to take all the notes and 'best bits' into a first draft.

The MORE form was just 'having a go' and finding answers online etc. then when I realized there was a recorded skype from my supervisor guiding me through the whole thing -afterward! I went back through it again, the notes in the MORE form are really helpful in finding templates etc.

I read some of the KORTEXT on 'how to research' in order to get an overall idea of what I was doing and some of the pitfalls not to fall into which helped.

SYPE CALL - Fri 03/04

This was really interesting and great to chat to everyone again, during this strange period...I am trying to use reflection as part of my every day now, as I think the world has told us to 'slow down' and listen to ourselves. I am starting to write a journal (morning pages - a great tool from the FAB book 'The Artists Way by Julia Cameron, a must-read!!) I think this whole COVID situation will help the world to be more patient, I hope it continues.

Most of us said we were a bit stuck on two things with the portfolio, the analysis of the research and the critical reflection part, I actually found once I jumped in and started writing it came a lot easier than just thinking about it.

one of the girls has already done a 'mock' interview with a trusted friend, which I thought was a great idea, to feel confident and happy with your questions and process going into module 3, so I am going to try that this week. I want to make sure I have the correct 'ingredients' to make the 'recipe' - and be able to use my data and analyze it. It was reassuring and interesting to hear some of us talk on: 'it doesn't matter if the interview or data is good/bad in your eyes, or does not produce what you thought - it is still data, and if it did not, why not? it is interesting to talk and discuss just as much.
One of the biggest things I will take away from the call is the idea of 'ABSENCE AS DATA' if there is something /theme that did not come up and that is odd or confusing to you then THIS IS DATA and useable, and something really interesting to include in the analysis.

We talked about body language and that being an interesting dynamic in analyzing interview, and perhaps why if someone is feeling uncomfortable, why? this could be a difficult topic or question and why is this or are ou affecting the interview in any way...any outward ethical considerations influencing the interview? Something I had not thought about too much but makes a lot of sense. The power of the unspoken word.

I was inspired by the suggestion of bringing a 'reflective journal' to the interview to write how I felt before/during/after the interview as this can be the data I can use as the inside researcher, analyzing against the interviews and literature, a good idea to have 'in the moment' data.

Helen bought up a good question on - WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE DATA? I guess mine would be; to help understand the issues artists have around a work/life balance and the aspects, tools, and needs they have in order to balance it.

To round things up we spoke on how it may be important to reference COVID-19 and how we have adapted ourselves and our work to this situation (which I will do a separate blog about) we do not need to separate things, this is affecting us and therefore our research so, therefore, our inquiry plan should acknowledge this.

We also discussed the idea of using everything, anything that went wrong, in module one or in two going into three; anything you thought would be a good idea/ or ways you tried to study/reflect that did not work- can be used as your growth and are sometimes the most important things to reflect upon.

WE ARE A WHOLE - MY PROCESS IS PART OF MY PRACTISE, LET IT HAVE A VOICE AND BE INTEGRAL.
